A ground/dragon type introduced in generation three, Flygon is quite a formidable Pokemon to encounter. The final evolution of Trapinch evolves from Vibrava at level 45. A dragon of the desert, it is capable of learning powerful dragon and ground-type moves. Known as “The Desert Spirit” in Pokemon canon, it also has the “Mystic Pokemon” epithet. It is particularly powerful in its generation bracket but did not age well with the newer generations as the newer Pokemon gave it a run for its money. This guide will showcase Flygon’s capability in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Flygon.

About Flygon

Introduced in generation three, Flygon became a favorite of fans due to its good type coverage. Its battle capabilities are what you would expect out of a strong dragon-type Pokemon. Flygon first appeared in the Pokemon movie Jirachi: Wish Maker. It also appeared in the main series of the Ruby and Sapphire season in Rhapsody in Drew. It is also seen in the Twilight Wings miniseries. Flygon gained its nickname “The Spirit of the Desert” due to the singing notes that can be heard when it creates a sandstorm according to the Pokedex. The final evolution of Trapinch, Trapinch will evolve into Vibrava at level 35, and Vibrava will evolve into Flygon at level 45.

Appearance of Flygon

A bipedal, insect-like dragon, Flygon is mostly green. Typical of the dragon types, it is rather tall at 6 feet and 7 inches or 2 meters. The antennae from Vibrara seem to have grown longer, and Flygon has red discs around its eyes resembling goggles. Inside these goggles, it has black eyes and a white pupil. It has two small T-rex-like arms and two small feet at its base. Its tail is striped with darker green and extends into a three-shaped fan. Its wings are lined with a similar red color that is seen around its eyes.

Behavior of Flygon

Held in high regard, Flygons are capable of creating large sandstorms with their wings. Like the Trapinch which lures in prey, Flygon uses the song from their wings and sandstorms to lure in prey. It is also known to cooperate with Krookodile to hunt prey together. They both respect each other’s role while hunting and will split the catch evenly. Flygon is not a particularly malevolent being, and it is known to save lost travelers in the desert barring any wrongdoing. The sandstorms that Flygon creates seem to be tied to its ability to fly as the Pokemon lore states that anywhere it flies it is always surrounded by sandstorms.

Strengths and Weaknesses

As a dragon/ground type Pokemon, it suffers from ice-type moves, taking a 4x multiplier from any ice move. Despite this weakness, Flygon is quite capable in battle. Flygon comes with the levitate ability making it completely immune from ground-type attacks. It has respectable physical attack and speed with balanced stats all around. While it does not excel in its sweeping capabilities, it is more representative of the phrase “Jack of all trades, king of nothing”. However, it is perfectly capable in casual play. In competitive play, it was one of the strongest Pokemon in the generation three bracket, but it is outclassed by other Pokemon in the newer generations as mega evolutions and other capable sweepers were introduced.

Shiny Flygon

Shiny Flygon maintains its green body but the accent colors are swapped out for a cerulean blue. The antennae on Shiny Flygon switch color as do the stripes on its tail. The red on regular Flygon is swapped for orange on Shiny Flygon. The trim around its wings, tail fan, and eyes become lighter. While only the accent colors were changed, Shiny Flygon looks quite distinct from regular Flygon. Like all shiny Pokemon, Shiny Flygon will have a starry entrance whenever it enters the battle.

Mega Flygon

Regrettably, Mega Flygon was not introduced into the game. It may disappoint fans of Flygon, but a Mega Flygon was planned to be added to the game, but never made it to the final product. According to Ken Sugimori, the artist designing Mega Flygon, he suffered from artist’s block preventing him from being able to get the design ready by the time the game was shipped. It is entirely possible that Mega Flygon gets introduced into new releases of Pokemon given that it was originally planned for X and Y. However, with two new Pokemon games since X and Y and no Mega Flygon in sight, the odds are becoming slimmer.

Best Moveset

In competitive Pokemon battles, Flygon is dominant in the Ruby and Sapphire brackets. You should consider Flygon as your designated sweeper and give it moves to cover many different types that your opponent could bring. Moves like Earthquake, Rock Slide, Hidden Power Bug, and Substitute/Fire Blast are recommended. Earthquake benefits from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), Rock Slide is good for double battles, Hidden Power Bug is for type coverage, and Substitute will grant you some stability, while Fire Blast is used for type coverage. In the older brackets, you should use leftovers for Flygon’s held item, if you want to use Flygon in newer brackets you will want to use a choice scarf so Flygon can reach the peaks that newer sweepers are capable of. Its moveset is similar, but you will want a U-turn for easy swaps, Outrage for STAB and dragon coverage, and supportive moves like Aerial Ace/Defog. Since the move Earthquake benefits from STAB, you can keep it in the newer generation brackets.

How to Catch Flygon in Pokemon Go

While Flygon is not available in the wild, you can always catch a Trapinch and evolve it into a Flygon eventually. You can also find Flygon in three-star raids in Pokemon gyms. Trapinch will spawn more frequently in sunny weather and is typically found in desert areas. It is relatively rare, but you can still find them with enough dedication. If you are still struggling to find Trapinch, you can also get them from 10 km eggs. It will take 25 candies to evolve Trapinch into Vibrava and another 100 candies to evolve into Flygon.

FAQs

Q. Is Flygon a good Pokemon?

Flygon is a solid Pokemon, especially in the older generations. It, unfortunately, did not age well and is often outclassed by newer Pokemon. Despite this, it is a perfect fit for casual play and for competitive battles can still see success in its respective brackets. Flygon is capable of learning a wide moveset making it great for covering problematic types in your team.

Q. Is Flygon Legendary?

While Flygon is a good Pokemon, it is not classified as a legendary Pokemon. It is not the mascot of Ruby and Sapphire and it can still be left at daycare for eggs. Flygon is not a legendary Pokemon by definition or battle capability. Its lore may lead you to believe it is a legendary Pokemon, but it is simply available in the wild, making it a popular pick for casual playthroughs.

Q. Which is better: Altaria or Flygon?

Flygon has more balanced stats and a higher physical attack and speeds stats. Altaria is better in terms of defense. Of course, Mega Altaria beats out Flygon in almost every statline except for speed and health. They are both equally weak to ice moves, so it really depends on what you need more on your team. Consider if you need a strong wall for special attackers or if you need a balanced Flygon for your team.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know about Flygon’s role in the Pokemon lore, its somewhat short-lived life in competitive brackets, and how to capture one for yourself in Pokemon Go. Flygon made quite an impact on the fanbase of the series and as such appeared quite often in the main series as well as minor appearances in the miniseries. This ground/dragon type Pokemon is a good pick for your team and can cover many problematic types. While Flygon may be outclassed by some of the newer Pokemon, it is still quite a formidable opponent.
